Don’t Allow Old Post to be Forgotten: How to Drive Traffic to Old Blog Posts

Writing and creating a blog post can take hours even days so you never want to allow your hard work to go to waste by abandoning old post. When it comes to old blog post it is very easy for them to be forgotten in the mix of new content. Luckily there are a few things you can do to drive traffic to to old content.

Link to Older Content + Related Post

I will start off with this one, because it is the most common strategy. It is the strategy  that will bring the most traffic to old post.  If you don’t promote old post or link to it in newer posts nobody’s going to know about it. When you write a new post, think about if you can link back to other relevant post.  Maybe you wrote a post about Pinterest  in 2015 and  since then, you’ve written about Pinterest four more times. Link to those later blog posts, find a way to work them into your new post. You can also go through old blog posts and add links where relevant to new content, or leave a “related post” tab at the bottom of new content.

Yoast SEO + SEO Your Updated Post

If you have not downloaded the Yoast SEO plugin yet, you need to right away. It will help you tremendously in improving your SEO. Not sure what SEO is?  This article will explain it more in depth. Once you have downloaded Yoast SEO you can go back to your old posts and add keywords, making your posts search-engine friendly. Don’t forget to add alt tags to your images,  and create a meta description.

Add a Popular Post Widget on Your Sidebar or Homepage

If you look through your analytics, you may find that some of your post are more popular than others they may even be post you wrote months ago. The best way to get those post out in the open, and readily available to your new readers is to add a Popular Post Widget on your sidebar or home page. The best way to do this is to use a plugin or set it up manually.

Create a Roundup Post

To bring more traffic to older post a good idea is to create a roundup post. What this means is you will create a post where you round up and link up your best content. For example, your top spring beauty post, best blogging tips. This way your new readers can see your old content all conveniently in one place.

Republish Old Content

If you happen to have a post that you worked really hard on, but you notice it is not getting much attention. Don’t be afraid to republish old content. This means updating photos, editing them, and revamping them, and finally republishing them.

Re-pin old post + Share on Social Media

Schedule an update on Facebook, post to Twitter, Instagram, Google+ or LinkedIn, and then pin it again. Revive Old Post is a great plugin that will help you with sending out automatic tweets linking to and promoting your old posts on Twitter and Facebook. Tailwind is also another great app that helps you to schedule your pins. It gives you an insight into your analytics where you can see which pins and/or boards are performing the best, but we will get to that in another post. Scheduling my pins to post automatically has changed everything. Don’t be afraid to re-pin old post and delete pins that are not performing well you never know they may go viral years later. That is why it is very important to update old post with Pinterest friendly images.
